33 Gable joinery

Gable Joinery: 8 November / 24 December 2016

Although painted; being exposed to sun, rain and wind for over a century hasn't done much good to the gable joinery.
The exposed sides of the timbers had developed a grey-ish layer of dead wood.
Not only the paint but also this grey-ish layer had to be removed to bring the timbers back to live again.

The fascia boards are Kauri and some rot had developed where moister had been trapped behind the paint.
Damage was mainly behind the feature fascia architraves and repairs are done with a double component epoxy

The feature fascia architraves are Kauri as well but not in a good state.
The zinc cover over the architraves had faltered and rain had been dripping in.
Out of four lengths only one and a half lengths of architraves could be retrieved.
I have decided the replace all four feature fascia architraves and to prevent water running in again in the future I will amend the profile of the architrave a wee bit.

All four quarter-round fascia boards came back alive perfectly after removal of paint and dead wood.

The Rimu T&G gable infill was dry to the bone and dead as.
The T&G (tan and groove) is replaced.

Sheltered by the roof the Rimu T&G soffit boards survived a century of outdoor use.
All gable timbers were very dry and the first layer of oil was almost more like "spooned" on instead of brushed on.
