11 Roof tiles

Roof tiles - 14 / 29 February 2016

The gutter sits at 3.5 meter high and the steepest roof pitch is close to 45 degrees.
Not being ready for having scaffolding just yet, the safest option to remove the roof tiles was from the inside out.
In order to do so I built a temporary working floor from of pallets on top of the existing ceiling joists.

The approx. 2,400 roof tiles are the original Marseille tiles (turtle series), each weighing 2.2 kg.
Every tile is fastened to the tile batten behind with a wire.
Once taken and stacked onto a wheel barrow, both wheel barrow and tiles were lowered to ground floor level by a winch and then wheeled into the garden.
After cleaning and sorting, the roof tiles were stacked onto pallets.
A driveway between the pallets was created to allow for a HIAB to drive in and scoop them up.

All ridge tiles were glued onto the roof with a nasty "1970's" mastique substance.
The job became time consuming once I started removing the roof tiles at corners, edges and ridges.
All bottom row roof tiles were cut in half to allow for a gutter.
The gutter was a PVC gutter and must have been attached to the house at a later stage.
