It had come to my mind that once a tool had dropped in the cavity it was impossible to retrieve it. any tools dropped into the cavity.
Taking out the last course of the Oamaru stone was quite exciting since the cavity was going to be opened for the first time in hundred years and theoretically there was a chance of finding some of the old masters tools.
I sifted out all the dirt at the bottom of the cavity but the only tools found were my own; chisels that had dropped into the cavity as I went along.
However …. a piece of timber from the cavity, that I initially had taken for some redundant offcut, appeared to be an old ruler. It showed its brass hinges after some cleaning.
It must have been George Barker Muschamps' favorite ruler.
My efforts were rewarded, wow.
